Obituary of Christina May Hoistion Roberts

Christina May Hoistion Roberts passed away peacefully on November 11, 2014, while under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County at the Ellis Farm. Christina was born on January 5th, 1928, in Russell, NY. She was the eldest child of Gladys Youngs Hoistion and George Hoistion. She attended a one room school house in Russell, later moving to Hounsfield, NY and attending Sackets Harbor High School. In 1945, she went to work for the Department of the Army in Washington, DC, and returned home after the end of World War II. On June 12, 1948, she married Floyd E. Roberts Jr. at the First Methodist Church in Watertown, NY. In 1958, they settled in Black River NY, where they would spend the rest of their lives. They enjoyed sailing from Sackets Harbor, camping, and winters in Florida. An avid cook, Christina operated the Five Corners Restaurant near Black River. On Halloween, kids would come back twice for her pop-corn balls. She worked as a bookkeeper and clerk for a number of companies including Ruddle Business Equipment, Rutland Hills Dairy, and Thomas H. Bradley Hardware. In 1989 she retired from the US Army Finance and Accounting Division at Fort Drum, NY. Christina was a Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, member and past President of the Lioness Club of Watertown, member of the Black River VFW ladies’ auxiliary and a member of the North Country Quilting Guild. An enthusiastic raconteur, her other hobbies include quilting, sailing, and gardening. She is survived by her 4 children: Pamela M. Lindsay of Santa Paula, CA, Thomas E. Roberts (Phyllis) of Theresa, NY, Cheryl E. Williams (Kermit) of Wilton, NH, Michael G. Roberts of Black River, her sister, Mary Lou Weaver, of Apopka, Florida, 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her husband, Floyd E. Roberts Jr., predeceased her in 2012. She was also predeceased by her 4 brothers; George, Larry, Nelson and Roger Hoistion. A memorial service and burial in the Black River Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Donations may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St, Watertown, NY 13601.
